Can extra snoozing reverse the health hazards of a bad night’s sleep?

Bad sleep can hurt your health, but new research suggests your body may be better at recovering than we thought. A large study tracking more than 85,000 people found that those who slept longer after a short night of sleep had a lower risk of dying over the next eight years compared with people who never caught up on rest. In other words, an extra hour of sleep after a rough night might actually matter.
The findings challenge the idea that only your average sleep time counts. Researchers say recovery sleep—whether during the week or after consecutive bad nights—could help offset some of the damage linked to sleep deprivation. Still, scientists warn this isn’t a free pass to stay up late every night. Sleep debt adds up, and regular rest remains essential. But if you’ve ever worried that one bad night ruined your health, this study offers some reassuring news: your body may already be trying to repair the damage while you sleep.
