NASA says it will isolate volunteers from the outside world for a year
NASA is inviting volunteers to spend a year in isolated conditions to prep for deep-space travel. From August 2027 at the earliest, a simulated mission will run at Johnson Space Center in Houston, with two confined habitats for a Moon and Mars Exploration Analog experience. The aim is to learn how crews cope during future missions to the Moon or Mars and to support NASA’s plans for a sustained lunar presence and Artemis. Applicants must endure a multi-day selection process and pass a psychological assessment, plus meet specific physical and educational criteria. The notice emphasizes a strong desire for unique experiences and a wish to contribute to extended stays on the lunar surface and the first crewed mission to Mars. In a world where funding and politics loom large, volunteers may face uncertainties, including potential cuts to the program while they’re in isolation
