
A particle made of force: physicists say they’ve found mysterious ‘glueball’

After nearly two decades of searching, physicists say they may finally have strong evidence for a particle made largely of something truly strange: force itself. The Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) Collaboration believes a particle called X(2370) is mostly made of glueballs—clusters of gluons, the particles responsible for binding quarks together.
The finding could help confirm a key prediction of quantum chromodynamics: that gluons can interact with one another. It may also shed light on one of physics’ biggest puzzles—where mass comes from. The evidence isn’t a single smoking gun, and researchers stress that X(2370) is likely a mixture rather than a pure glueball. Still, after analyzing nearly ten billion particle decays and years of measurements, physicists say the case is becoming difficult to ignore. Could we finally be seeing a particle made from the force that holds matter together?
