Human receives AI-designed virus for the first time
An AI-designed virus cocktail has been given to a human patient for the first time, according to San Francisco biotech company Radical Numerics. Its Omnii-1 model helped design bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria—which the company tested against bacteria from the patient’s antibiotic-resistant infection. There’s a promising lab result: the cocktail eliminated the patient’s bacterial sample in vitro. But the company hasn’t shared what happened after treatment, and says one case can’t show whether the approach is safe or effective. The infection hasn’t been identified, either. Phage therapy is already being explored as an alternative to antibiotics, and this case marks a step from lab tests to clinical use. What happened next—and what it could mean for fighting drug-resistant infections—remains unclear.
