Researchers are spotlighting a smarter way to power photosynthesis in crops. Scientists found a simple tweak in RubisCO, the enzyme at the heart of carbon fixation, that helps plants concentrate CO2 where it’s needed. When they added this “STAR” region from Hornwort RubisCO to Arabidopsis and a relative, the enzyme clumped together, a key step toward concentrating CO2. The big idea: pair this with efficient CO2 delivery to boost yields and cut resource use. While not a complete solution yet, this discovery could increase efficiency to staple crops like wheat and rice, potentially lifting yields by up to 50%. It’s a promising piece in a complex puzzle shaping sustainable agriculture.
