NYT – Don’t Shill for Fake Psychics

A NYT piece by Sarah Wildman pretends to hedge its stance, but it ultimately promotes an exploitative industry. Wildman recounts a personal grief story involving a medium, while her own conflict of interest undermines objectivity. The article treats belief and healing as interchangeable with proof, ignores how much of mediumship rests on cold reading and confirmation bias, and skims over the sustained fraud in the industry. The takeaway is clear: grief can be supported through legitimate, secular means, not through paying for readings that rely on deception. Editors should have challenged the piece; readers deserve journalism that separates compassionate care from credulous promotion.
