Finally – A Carbon Nanotube Application

A private company’s new fibre marks a real milestone: a macroscopic, organized carbon nanotube (CNT) fibre with scalable production. The core idea is simple: a wet-solution fibre-spinning process—similar to Kevlar—turns CNTs into usable fibre at scale. Pilot production has slashed costs and boosted productivity dramatically, hinting at broader rollout for aerospace, electronics, and grid applications. The material shines in specific strength and flexibility, and it conducts electricity better by weight than copper, though not by volume, so applications matter. Heat tolerance is a caveat: conductivity drops if the cable hits 100 C. Practical use appears strongest where weight matters: aerospace structures and lightweight wiring for EVs and electronics. For power grids, this new product could serve as a structural core, reducing weight, but it won’t replace copper conductors there. The big picture is incremental, yet promising progress toward a future of lighter, stronger, more conductive wires—and perhaps, someday, room-temperature superconductivity.
