We all pass them every day—the beautiful old buildings in our neighbourhoods. But there’s a big difference between appreciating architecture and being a member of a faith. Statistics Canada instructs you to indicate a religion even if you are not a practicing member. This instruction creates a “phantom constituency”—millions of Canadians who appear on paper to support religious institutions but never step inside. These inflated numbers are used to justify billions in public funding for separate schools and tax exemptions for property.
